Dent Post #4 Northern Lights Article

Read this article from the Kansas City Star.

Northern Lights Take an Unusual Trip Down South

The next day, some students reported to me that they had seen this phenomenon. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see them. My house has too many trees around it on the north side.

Did you get to see the northern lights the other night?  If so, describe what they looked like. (Only comment, do not create a new post.)

Ajolote lizard.
The Ajolote Lizard aka the Mexican Mole Lizard lives mainly underground eating worms and other insects. This reptile can be found only in the Baja California peninsula in Mexico – if you happen to go there on vacation, get to the wild and start overturning rocks and digging lightly around the mesquite. When you see a long, flesh-colored creature with 2 minuscule arms and a set of pinholes for eyes, you’ll know what it is:
This creeps me out. Nasty looking thing! Hes weird looking and his color is really weird!

Post number 3

Naked Mole Rat

1.) -They are radicivores. Which means they eat tubers. One large tuber can feed an entire colongy for years.

-Naked mole rats aren't moles nor rats. They are closely related to hedgehogs and porcupines.

-Naked mole rats don't like outsiders. They roll around in toliet chambers so all of them share the same smell.

2.) The naked mole rat or sand puppy is really creepy looking. I remember how I used to watch Kim possible and Rufus is the mole rat on that show. Rufus definitely isn't as scary as the real mole rat though.

1.Star Faced Mole

2.Its 22 fleshy tentacles are super-sensitive to touch.
The star-nosed mole hunts worms and insects, and its specialized nose allows it to capture and eat its prey 14 times faster than any other mole.

3. This mole creeps me out because it very strage looking with its no eyes and huge hands.

1.This is a Yoda Bat.

2.This animal is very rare, you can only find them in Papua New Guinea, and they say this is from a lost world.
3.Because this is something I would not wanna see in the dark!

Dent Post #3 Creepy Animals

In the spirit of Halloween, let's post about the creepiest animal we can think of.  Maybe you remember a scary movie that had a creepy animal in it, or maybe there is an animal that you are afraid of every time you see it, or maybe there is an animal that you have had scary dreams about. Choose a creepy animal and follow these directions:
  • Post a picture of the creepiest animal you can think of (be creative, but make sure it is a real animal).
  • Give 3 pieces of information about that animal.
  • Tell why this animal creeps you out.
Happy Halloween!

Post Two! :)

1. What part of your insect collection experience was the easiest?
Pinning all the bugs and collecting them! :)
2. What part of your insect collection experience was the hardest?
Figuring out what bug was what and labeling.
3. If you had to start another collection for this class, what would you do differently the second time? What would you do the same way?
I would do it by my self and get better materials and not wait till the second to last day to put it all together. And i would look for bugs all the time no matter where i was at and what time like i did this time. :)
4. Give the most important piece of advice you can think of for an amateur insect collector.
Never give up on that one little but that you really want, and want to find out about! :) just crawl on the ground and sneak up on it and catch it! :)
5. Share two website links that would be helpful to beginning collectors.

1. What part of your insect collection experience was the easiest?

Catching the bugs was probably the easiest.

2. What part of your insect collection experience was the hardest?

Labling the bugs was the hardest part.

3. If you had to start another collection for this class, what would you do differently the second time? What would you do the same way?

I would catch more bugs. I would do the lables and everything else the same way.
4. Give the most important piece of advice you can think of for an amateur insect collector.

Dont put more then onw bug in the same jar, they might eat each other.

1. I think the easiest part of the insect project was collecting all the bugs you needed, because they just kinda caught your eyes after the first couple.

2. The labeling, because you have to write really tiny and you have to now where you got them and what the date was and who caught them.

3.Well if I was to do another collection I would of just jumped into helping my partner on the labeling instead of waiting for her to ask, and what I would do the same is looking for bugs just as good as I did the first time.

4.Be alert for any bugs, and make sure you have a piece of paper and pencil ready to collect all information you can.

1. Personally I think catching the bug was was the easiest. It was fun and adventurous.

2.The hardest part of the bug collection was the labeling. You have to look at many different things, the wings, the body and the color.

3.I wouldn't put off the labeling, everyday after getting a bug I would label it.

4. Everyday after you get a bug label it, or take paper with you when you are bug hunting! So you won't hacve to do it all at once.

1. The easiest part about insect collection was probably just catching the bugs.

2. The hardest for me was the Labeling. It just took a long time and you have to get the picture in the books and the insect exactly alike.

3. I would Probably try too catch alot more bugs the second time differently. And i would pin them all the same..

4. When trying to catch that cool looking bug that you really want No matter how fast it is, dont stop until you Catch it!! Haha

1. The easiest part on our insect collection, was pinning the insects.
2. The hardest part on our insect collection was definitely catching the insect.
3. I wouldn't really do anything different, I thought that we did good, maybe just catch more bugs?
4. Make sure you label every insect, don't wait till the last minute to do it, and when you catch a bug write the date and where you got it at.

1. Catching the bugs was deffinatly the easiest.

2. Lableing was the hardest part, trying to remember who when and where you caught the bug and then finding witch species of bug you have was very pain staking

3. I would plan everything out a little more carefully, i'd keep the same partner

4. always keep your eyes open for new and interesting insects

Praying Mantis:

1. Mantids can turn their heads 180 degrees.

2. Mantids eat Moths, crickets, grasshoppers, flies, and other insects. Even their own kind.

3.When it's threatened, the praying mantis will stand tall, and spread it's wings out and have it's mouth wide open, so that it seems large, and scares the others away.

*I thought this bug was intresting because of its camouflage, and how it scares off predators.

1. The most easiest experience was probably catching the bugs.
2. The hardest was labeling all of them, only because it takes so long.
3. I would probably get the labels ready as we go, and would of gotten the foam first.
4. Do the labels as you catch the bugs.

  • Luna Moth
  • A Luna Moth will lay 200 eggs in small groups; When the antennas on the moth are bushier than another than it is a male and the ones with the less bushier antennas are females; Once the eggs are laid then it takes them about ten days to hatch.
  • I thought this was interesting because they are very rare here and you only find a few every year.
  • post 2..

    1. What part of your insect collection experience was the easiest?
catching the bugs and killing them. ha

    2. What part of your insect collection experience was the hardest?
finding out what kind of bugs they were labeling them.

    3. If you had to start another collection for this class, what would you do differently the second time? What would you do the same way?
next time i would definitely write down everything about the bug (where i found it, date) and find out what the bugs are called that day i caught it.

    4. Give the most important piece of advice you can think of for an amateur insect collector.
ALWAYS write down where you found the bug, the date, and look up what its called and it;s order that exact day. it is so much easier.

    5. Share two website links that would be helpful to beginning collectors.
    1. The easiest part of the insect project would have been catching the bugs.

    2.
Trying to label all the bugs and find different orders of bugs was the hardest part.

    3. I would label all of my bugs as soon as I pin them, instead of catching all the bugs first.

    4. Stay organized, organize all of the different orders while labeling,

The easiest part of the insect collection project was catching the bugs! It was probably the most fun I have had in school so far.

The hardest part of the project was labeling and pinning the bugs. Some of the bugs I had found outside, were difficult to label.

I would try to catch some of the same bugs, but definately alot more different types of butterflies. I would label the bugs right after I found them to save me the trouble of rushing it all at the end of the experiment.

My advice to any amatuer, even though I am as well, is to make sure you keep everything recorded. All your dates, locations, and who caught theAdd Image bugs. It is very important.

    1. I think the process of catching the bugs was the easiest experience.
    2. The hardest was the pinning and labeling! It was dificult!
    3. I would probably use my time more wisely, if i were to do this again! But i would still catch alot of butterflies! (:
    4. Most important piece of advice for an amateur is to use your time wisely! Time will fly by, and you won't have time to do anything before the due date!

Bumble bees are Social insects that are characterized by black and yellow body hairs
The blood or hemolymph, as in other arthropods, is carried in an open circularity system
Queen and worker bumble bees can sting. Unlike a honey bee's stinger a bumble bee's stinger lacks barbs, so they can sting more than once.

Bumble bees are ver interesting! I like their colors, they are very laid back animals. they just are interesting

    1. Monarch Butterfly

    2. When they are caterpillars you can usually find them on milkweed. They will also only lay their eggs on milkweed. They way you can tell a male from a female, is that the male monarch has dots at the bottom of the lower wing, and the female doesnt.

    3. The monarch are very unique and beautiful, and can be very hard to catch. And i like it because of it's bright colors.

4.I thought this butterfly was very pretty, and also Ren and I took a long time to collect it.

    Project Post One

    Post 1

In this project (first post) I am to answer a question, which is "What is the most interesting insect you had found in your collection?".
For my favorite insect I have chosen the Anisozygoptera or "ancient dragon fly" from the Odonata order.

    1. Some interesting facts about the characteristics of the Anisozygoptera is that in Greek, its name means uneven wings because its hind wings are broader than its fore-wings.
    2. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body.
    3. A Dragon fly possess 6 legs like any other insect but is not able to walk very well.
Also for these very reasons, I like the dragon fly.

    1. Bush Katydid

    2. ..generally green with long wings
    3. ..lives in trees, bushes, or grasses
    4. ..feed on plant matter

    1. Stink Bug
    2.
    3. Stink bugs are true bugs (Order: Hemiptera). All insects in Hemiptera share a few characteristics, including piercing and sucking mouthparts, and wings which are membranous and clear at the tips, but hardened at the base. Stink bugs are distinguished from other members of Hemiptera by their broad, shield-shaped bodies, 5-segmented antennae, and large "scutellums".
    4. I thought this insect was interesting because it was the only true bug I could find.

    1. My favorite insect is a Malachite butterfly.

    File:Malachite (Siproeta stelenes) dorsal (1).jpg

    3.

This butterfly cannot survive in cold weather, like some of the other butterflies.

It's wings are a beautiful pattern of ebony and light green colors.

It has a wingspan of 31/2in to 4in.

    4. I like this insect the most, because of the brilliant colors that blend well, and the dazzling shapes of the wings. Butterflies have always been intriguing to me. I love how they are able to fly whenever or wherever they would like.

    Praying Mantis Post #1

    1. Praying Mantis

    2. <-----

    3. The praying mantis is named for its prominent front legs, Moths, crickets, grasshoppers, flies, and other insects are usually the unfortunate recipients of unwanted mantid attention, and Females regularly lay hundreds of eggs in a small case, and nymphs hatch looking much like tiny versions of their parents.

    4. I like this insect because it blends in, and it is very hard to find, but once you find it, it's a really neat insect.

    The Blu Bayou: Welcome!

    Dent Post #1: Entomology Project

We just finished our first project of the year which was entomology.  Students were asked to create a collection of 25 or more insects and have at least ten different orders represented.

Students:  What was the most interesting insect you found for your collection?

    1. Name that insect.
    2. Post a picture of that insect.
    3. List 3 characteristics of that insect.
    4. Tell why you thought it was so interesting.
